My heart and soul have been filled with encouragement and a sense of belonging through the women we are told about in Scripture.
These women were counter cultural in their own time and still are today. I’m partucularly taken with how Jesus redefined the role of women in society. They are not hidden away, but he puts them in the forefront, on the front lines of his compassionate revolution. He treats them as they are…as strong, capable, courageous, fiercly loving, gentle warriors.
My artwork has delved into this theme in the past year, but just enough to get my toes wet. I’m looking at diving into it now.
This piece, “Sing, Mary, Sing” is a picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus, after she has received the shocking news that, through impossible means, she is pregnant with the Son of God. She stares in the face of culture, scandal and shame, and responds with belief…with a ‘yes.’ She sings.
I’ve tried to capture her sober mood as she sings praises to God. She does this at great cost. The line between joy and grief are blurred in our walk with the Lord.
This piece is currently in The Open Doors Gallery Spring Exhibit. Opening reception April 17th, 2015, 7pm at 12124 Ranch Rd 620 N, Austin, TX 78750. I’d love to see you there!
