Stories From My 2017 Solo Show – An Open Window

Living in a Chinese city that is majority Muslim, there are mosques on every corner like there are churches on every corner in the United States’ Bible belt.  Though I felt very comfortable with many aspects of the new culture

Stories From My 2017 Solo Show – Playing Checkers in the Street

Just outside our apartment complex in the city of Urumqi, China, on a poor little avenue where very little traffic came through, groups of men would play checkers. Smoking, drinking, and gambling, they’d pass their days and go home

6 Questions Artists Should Regularly Ask Themselves

While I was living overseas working with a non-profit org, it was regular practice to take a step back and reassess our situation to make sure we were staying on track with our values.  It was an effective way to

The Musician

We’ve been studying the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations in Scripture as a church on Sunday mornings.  As a person who is drawn to the melancholy, I get a sense of vindication reading Jeremiah’s words.  The world isn’t all rainbows

An Open Window

Open your windows and your doors.  Behind and beyond the walls there is belonging.  Enter in. The first piece completed for my solo show coming April 2017.  I was spending a lot of time looking at Robert Henri paintings while

DUE WEST 2015 and “She Remembers the Meat Market”

My desire for this series is to explore the anonymity of modern life and ask the question, “Can we have community and be tied to each other in our polarized opinions and convictions, in the places we are different or opposed, and choose to love one another?”

Due West

Friends, one of the goals I set for myself this year was to connect with the greater arts community in Austin, TX and show work in new venues. Although it’s slow going for this introvert, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to connect with Big Medium and the artists involved with this amazing non-profit org. Big Medium puts on the extremely popular EAST and WEST Austin studio tours every year, as well as the Texas Biennial.

To help support these important cultural events in Austin, Big Medium is throwing a super fun party and exhibition, Due WEST, on Thursday, April 30th, 2015 from 7 – 10pm at University Park, 3300 N Interstate 35, Austin, TX 78705.

An Artist’s Thick Skin

Artists are supposed to have a thick skin.  A ton of rejection comes with this business.  It’s just a part of it, and that’s cool.  Not everyone will like my work or what I have to say.  I’m finding that

The Woman at the Well

Inspired by the theme for the upcoming PACT show, “Gratitude,” here is the third piece that will be showing at the 10th anniversary fall exhibition. The woman at the well chats with Jesus and her entire world is turned upside

The Open Doors Gallery 2013 Retrospective

The words “gallery talk” might bring up images of snooty, tweed, suede elbow patched, high brow boringness, but this gallery talk is far from any of these.  My friends and colleagues, Sue Costa, Linda Ezzel and Cathy Sax are sharing
