*I lived as an expat in China for 7 years. The first 2 were spent trying my hardest to fit in by learning and studying the language and culture. I quickly learned that would never happen. Some of the loneliest moments I experienced during my time living there were in the crowds. The bus was an especially lonely place for me. No one looked at each other, either looking out the window, at their feet or at their smart phone. I felt completely insignificant and wondered if anyone cared that I was there at all. The saddest thought I had was that everyone on the bus around me most likely felt the same way.
